Bungalow front entry with deadbolt extended, visible gap, reinforced strike plate, hinge screws, jamb repair and new sweep in warm daylight.

Last winter, my neighbor called me at 7 a.m. because his front door wouldn't close. The deadbolt was stuck halfway out and cold air was pouring in. He'd been shoving it shut for weeks, but that morning it finally gave up. That's the reality of door problems in Indianapolis — the freeze-thaw cycles and summer humidity make wood swell, frames shift, and hardware fail. At HandyPros, we see this all the time and we know how to fix it without tearing out your trim or spending a fortune on a new door.

Common Door Repairs Around Indianapolis

Most door problems start small. A little drag, a squeaky hinge, a latch that needs a jiggle. Then one hot July day the door won't latch at all, or one cold January morning you can't get it closed. In older neighborhoods like Irvington or Meridian-Kessler, the original frames have settled over decades. Doors end up out of square, and the latch misses the strike plate by half an inch. One job in Broad Ripple: a 1920s bungalow front door had a sagging hinge and a cracked jamb. We rehung the door, added longer screws into the framing, and mortised in a new strike plate. The homeowner said it closed better than it had in ten years.

We fix door frame repair, door jamb repair, threshold repair, and door hinge replacement. If the bottom of your door drags on the carpet or the top rubs against the header, that's often a hinge issue. Sometimes the frame itself has rot near the bottom—especially on south- or west-facing doors that get all the sun and rain. We cut out the bad wood, replace it with rot-resistant composite or treated lumber, and repaint to match. No need to replace the whole door because of a soft corner.

Lock Repair, Rekeying, and Smart Locks

Locks get sticky, loose, or just wear out. Maybe you lost a key, or you just bought a house and don't know who else has a copy. Rekeying locks is the cheapest way to make old keys useless without replacing all the hardware. We can rekey most brands in under an hour. A landlord downtown had a tenant move out and needed the place rekeyed before the weekend. We were there the same afternoon, swapped the cylinders, and added a reinforced strike plate. She had new keys and peace of mind by dinnertime.

If your deadbolt is hard to turn or the latch is loose, we can repair or replace it. Deadbolt installation with a longer throw and hardened screws makes a real difference. We also install smart locks you bought yourself, or we can recommend one that fits your door and your phone. No fancy upsells—just a lock that works and a door that stays shut. For exterior doors, we always recommend security strike plate reinforcement. The strike plate is the little metal plate on the frame where the bolt goes in. Most factory strikes are held in with short screws that only grab the jamb. We replace them with longer screws that bite into the framing behind the jamb. That one upgrade can turn a door that a kid could kick in into something that actually holds.

Sliding Doors, Storm Doors, and Weatherproofing

Patio doors and storm doors get abused by Midwest weather. Sliding patio door repair is one of our most common calls. Out near Geist, a homeowner's patio door was practically impossible to open. The rollers were ground down to nothing and the track was full of sand and grit. We replaced the rollers, cleaned the track, and adjusted the alignment. Now the door slides with one finger. If your sliding door is heavy, sticks, or comes off the track, don't force it. You'll bend the track or crack the glass. Call us.

Storm doors are popular in Indy. They help with drafts but the closers and latches wear out. If your storm door slams shut or won't stay open, we can adjust the closer or replace it. We also replace door sweeps and weatherstripping to stop drafts. A new door sweep on the bottom and fresh weatherstripping around the frame can cut your heating bill and stop the cold air that sneaks in around the edges. One customer in Fishers replaced her weatherstripping and threshold in November. She said her front hallway stopped feeling like a walk-in freezer by December.

How We Work: Clear Quotes, Fast Repairs

We don't do vague estimates or fake urgency. When you call, we schedule an on-site assessment—usually the same day or next day. We come out, look at the door, and tell you honestly if it's worth fixing or if you'd be better off replacing. Most of the time, a repair is a fraction of the cost. You'll get a written, itemized quote before any work starts. No surprise add-ons.

We carry common parts on the truck—strike plates, hinges, sweeps, rollers, weatherstripping. If we need a special part, we can usually get it within a day. Many repairs are done the same visit. We clean up the work area, test the door and lock, and walk you through what we did. You'll see before and after photos if you want them. We work all over Indianapolis and surrounding areas like Carmel, Fishers, Zionsville, Westfield, Noblesville, Greenwood, Brownsburg, Avon, Plainfield, and Lawrence.
